(8) Sprinkle some more compost over the top to cover the seeds. (7) Use your finger, chopstick or twig to gently push the seeds down into the compost by about 1-2cm. (6) Take your packet of sweet peas and sow two seeds on the surface of each toilet roll tube. (5) Pop the relevant label between a tube and the rubber band or twine at this point. (4) Rubber band the tubes together for sturdiness, or bind with twine. You’ll sow the same variety into each set of tubes. 3×3 or 4×4 gives a nice square form which utilises tray space better. (3) Stand the toilet roll tubes together in a tray and fill almost to the top with compost. Keep each label with the corresponding seed packet until placing it with your sowings. It keeps your pencil or pen clean for future use too. It’s so much neater to prepare them with clean hands than fiddling around with compost-caked fingers and thumbs. (2) Write out your labels before touching anything else. Even setting up and clearing away an inside table is preferable. I used to sit on the ground to sow seeds, but it’s just too awkward. I did it on our dining table, covered with some cardboard. Additionally, they allow you to plant straight into the ground or a larger container without disturbing the roots. Toilet roll tubes: These resolve the issue of an ample root run well.A standard module tray won’t provide the depth they prefer. The other factor to bear in mind is container depth. A greenhouse is ideal a south-facing window or conservatory is the next best location.Īnything else will cause your sweet peas to become a tangled, pale mess. You’ll want to keep indoor seedlings in as bright a spot as possible. We manipulate this, keeping them sheltered inside, where it isn’t as bright. Their default mode, if you like, is to germinate at the right time of year outdoors, in natural light. Legginess can cause a real headache with plants sown too early. Before that I’d have struggled to find anywhere light enough to overwinter sweet peas without them becoming leggy. I recently picked up a mini greenhouse which helps protect hardier seedlings right now. Late winter and early spring sowings are perfect if you’re low on indoor space, like I am. However, that can be a real boon, giving you sweet peas for the house as late as September even. Later sowings will flower slightly later. I sowed my 2022 sweet peas on February 1 st, but you have time right up until mid-April. Like many legumes (like edible peas and beans), they’ll germinate at fairly low temperatures and grow slowly but surely as spring approaches. Sweet peas ( Lathyrus odoratus) are some of the few seeds I’ll sow in February.
